
PREPARING ROMA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FOR ENROLLING IN THE MEDICAL FACULTIES IN REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA
In August 2010, the Center for Institutional Development –CIRa, Skopje started the implementation of the Project for preparing Roma high school students for enrolling in the Medical faculties in Republic of Macedonia, in the framework of the Program for medical scholarships for Roma in Macedonia, financially supported by the Roma Education Fund (REF) and Open Society Institute (OSI) Budapest. The project aims to contribute towards development of professional medical personnel among the Roma Population and to increase the level of representation of Roma students at the medical faculties.
The rationale behind this project is to support and simplify the access of young Roma people to the natural sciences, especially medicine. More specifically, the project is focused on:
- increasing the level of motivation and encouragement of Roma high school students to study medicine
- professional preparation of 30 Roma high school students from IV year of study for enrolling in the medical faculties in RM in accordance with the state graduation’s requirements
The Project activities are divided in three key phases:
- First preparatory phase and is comprised of: establish cooperation with relevant stakeholders, Present and promote the program as well as to motivate and encourage the students to apply for the preparatory courses, preparatory activities for establish base for implementation of the second phase of the project
- Second phase is comprised of implementation of the preparatory courses: Implemented preparatory courses for 23 subjects and 21 project assignments, Simultaneous delivery in Prielp, Tetovo and Skopje in 3 languages: Macedonian, Albanian and Turkish, for 21 Roma students.
- Phase three is going to be implementing via final preparatory workshop; At the workshop the attention will be paid to final preparations before the exams. The key focus will be given to the topics that are addressed as the most difficult ones by the students, meaning the external subject and one internal subject from the State Matura.
- ensure final preparations for all subjects, meaning clarification and verification of the gained knowledge
- prepare the students for the exams and increase the level of motivation and self-confidence
The project implementation period is one year and the activities will take place in the Municipalities of Skopje, Bitola and Tetovo. The Project will be implemented in cooperation and partnership with the targeted municipalities, the Vocational educational and training center under the Government of Republic of Macedonia, the State Medical High Schools and Roma Non-governmental organizations.
